Arthur Ewart Baxter – 46 High Street

Arthur Ewart Baxter was born in Stamford in April 1894 to parents Jesse Baxter, a labourer in the Iron Foundry who was born in Thornaugh, and his wife, Salome, a Cornish woman. They lived at 6 Milner’s Row but had moved to 46 High Street by 1911. At that time Arthur was a lathe turner. He had 4 older siblings – Louise, Walter, Jessie, Mabel – and 1 younger, Alice.

When Arthur joined the 4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment Territorials, he had moved again to Betts Cottage, North Street and then again to 1 Vine Street. He served in Aberystwith from 1911 to 1913. He was in France from 1-3-15 to 5-5-17 in the Expeditionary Force.

Arthur was appointed Lance Corporal on 29-8-15 but was reduced back to Private on 1-1-16.

After an injury causing muscular spinal paralysis, he was sent home unfit for war service and given a Protection Certificate on the grounds of his ill health. He returned to Sunny Bank, East Street. He received the 1914/15 Star.

In 1917 he married Sarah J. Oldham at Stamford and they had 3 children, Freda (1919), Geoffrey (1923) and Doris (1925).

He died when his children were still young on 12th January 1933.
