8th December 2015 James Edward Abbott In 1911 James Edward aged 14 was living at Castle Cottage 8 Sheepmarket with his parents, Thomas and Georgina, brother Norman aged 6 and sister Ivy Louise aged 12. His father was a land agent’s estate clerk. He was 19 when he enlisted with the Territorials in October 1915 in the East Anglian Field Company. He was serving in England from 1915 to 1917 and was posted to France with the Durham Light Infantry in September 1917. He was transferred to the Royal Engineers and promoted to Lance Corporal. He was awarded a pension when he left the army on account of dyspepsia. He returned to Castle Cottage where he lived for many years. He died in Stamford in 1976.
