Herbert Blake

Herbert, born in 1898 was the son of George William and Caroline Blake. There were eleven children in the family and he was the third of the five boys in the family. His father was listed as a self-employed chandler and Herbert was aged thirteen and still at school. In 1911 the family lived at 19 Bentley Street, previously they had lived at 8 Elm Street.

By 1916 they had moved to Luton and Herbert gave 200 Hitchin Road as his address when he enlisted with the Royal Engineers in May 1916. He was transferred to the R.A.S.C in 1918 and served in France.

He was demobbed and received a pension of 16shillings a week as he was suffering from VDH (Valvular Heart Disease) with a 40% disability.

He married Alice M. Yarrill in 1928 and died in Luton in June 1970.
