George H. W. Cole – 44 Empingham Road

George’s parents had lived in Kettering where their first three children were born but they moved to Stamford by 1887. When George was born in August 1898, his father, Albert, was the publican at the Star and Garter at 10 Scotgate however his mother died in 1902 leaving 5 children under 11 years.

In 1904, his father married again to Emma Wakeling who had a 4 year old daughter, Winifred. Winifred, George and his sister Bertha attended St John’s School but soon after the marriage they moved to St Martin’s School where they stayed for 18 months during which time their address was 3 Church St, St Martin’s.

By 1911 Albert had set up on his own account as a General Dealer living at 44 Empingham Road. His eldest son, also Albert, was working with him. What the younger children were doing was not indicated.

There are no records of George serving in the War but his brother Albert became a Lance Corporal and was killed in action in 1916 while serving with the Lincolnshire Regiment.

After the War, George married Francis Louise Lawson in 1920. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters all in the local area. He died in Stamford in 1979.
