8th December 2015 Arthur Cooke Arthur was born in Peterborough in 1898 and lived in Kettering at 123 St Saviours Road with his father William (a bricklayer’s labourer), mother Emma and baby sister Beatrice. A schoolboy in 1911, at the time of the census he was staying temporarily with his paternal grandparents, William and Mary Cooke, at 13 Burghley Lane, Stamford. His grandfather worked as a domestic butler and there was one son, Tom aged 21, still at home. On 7 Sep 1914 Arthur enlisted as Private 8417 in the East Surrey Regiment. He gave his address as 8 Sylvan Street, Leicester and his next-of-kin as father, William. He was posted to France at the end of September 1914 and served there and later in Salonica. He was wounded on 21 April 1916 but continued to serve abroad until his demobilisation on 13 April1919.
