John William and Arthur Deacon– 8 Rock Road

John William and Arthur Deacon were both born in Castle Bytham but grew up living in Stamford on Rock Road. Their parents had 3 children who died young but 5 surviving of whom 4 were living with them at 8 Rock Road in 1911. Both the boys were errand boys: John William 14 years for a butcher and Arthur probably for anyone who would pay him.

Their father was a brickyard labourer, Annie Elizabeth Deacon, their mother died in June 1914.

Arthur served with the Northants Regiment. He joined up in 1915 when he was 17 years old but did not go abroad immediately. He was awarded the British and Victory Medals and was raised to the rank of Corporal.

John William

John enlisted in Stamford and served with the Sherwood Foresters (10th Battalion Notts & Derby Regiment). He was killed in action in Flanders on 17th January 1918. He was buried at Hermies Hill British Cemetery, Pas de Calais and is commemorated on Stamford War Memorial.
