Sidney James Christopher Ellis

Sidney James Christopher Ellis

Sidney Ellis’ parents came from Devon where his grandfather was a gold & silversmith but Sidney was born in Battersea when his father was working there as a jeweller’s assistant. Presumably his father came to Stamford to set up his own business sometime in the early 20th Century. In 1911 he was a watch and jewellery dealer and 13 year old Sidney was a schoolboy.

Sidney had 2 sisters. Enid aged 15 years was also at school while his elder sister, 17 year old Gwendoline was a clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank and a resident of an establishment for working girls in Chelsea.

Although the family had left Maiden Lane by 1916 and Sidney gave an address in Acton when he enlisted in 1917, he still had a tenuous connection with Lincolnshire. He became a Flight Officer in the Royal Navy and took his Royal Aero Club Certificate on an Avro Biplane at Cranwell.
