John Newton Flanders – 52 Scotgate

John Newton Flanders was born in Essex and in 1901 his father was a Head Gardener in Warwickshire. Sometime between 1902 and 1905 they moved to Stamford and lived at 52 Scotgate which was to be John’s address for the rest of his life.

In 1911, he was 16 years old and assisting his father who was a Nurseryman and Seedsman. He had a younger brother and a younger sister.

The only military record that survives is a Medal Card. This shows that he served in the Lincs Yeomanry and the Machine Gun Corps. He was awarded the British and Victory Medals so must have served abroad in a theatre of war but the location is not given.

In 1923, John married Annie Elizabeth Holland and they had 3 children, George in 1924, Thomas in 1926 and Kathleen in 1927.

He died on 17th January 1965, leaving £3,855 to his widow who was still living at 52 Scotgate at that time.
