8th December 2015 Robert Edward and George Cyril Middleton – 1 Elm Street In 1895 Edward Middleton married Frances Emma Stafford. They were to have 7 children by 1911 all of whom were listed on the census – Elizabeth Frances 15 years , a general servant: Robert Edward 13 years (born 1897) a marine store assistant; George Cyril 11 years & Winifred Ellen 10 years both at school; Nellie 9 years ; Gwendoline Ivy 3 years ; John William Leslie 1yr. In fact Nellie, born about 1902, and Gwendoline, born about 1909 had both died before they were a year old. Elizabeth Frances was crossed out by the enumerator (presumably because she was not living at home) however he doesn’t seem to have noticed that the other two girls should not have been listed either. In 1901 Edward, the father of the family, was absent from the census because he was a soldier serving with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in South Africa but no military records or references have been found for either Robert Edward or George Cyril. An E Middleton of 1 Elm St is listed in the Stamford Mercury on 23rd Dec 1914 among those who enlisted. This could be Edward, the father, or Robert Edward who only have been 17 years old. No marriage or death records been found for Robert Edward although George Cyril married Margaret Norah Garratt in 1924 in Stamford and they had one son, Bernard. George Cyril died in Newark in 1975 and his wife died in Stamford in 1976 John W L Middleton married Violet Glover in Leicester in 1937.
