Nowadays Stamford High Street is pedestrianized and one of the main shopping streets in the town. There are a variety of shops but few are selling fresh food. In 1911 this was also a main shopping street however there were several provision merchants as well as some selling more luxury goods. There were half a dozen or more drapers’ shops alongside butchers and bakers. There were 3 grocers, 2 chemists, 2 tobacconists, 3 stationers, 2 bank managers, 3 tailors, 3 jewellers and a seed merchant. It would have been a busy place. The proprietors or managers and their families often lived over the shops. There were nearly 60 households however there were surprisingly few boys aged 11 years to 16 years living in the street.
