6th December 2015 George Bedford Roberts – 4 West End Villas Thomas Roberts, a joiner and his wife Rebecca had 5 children all born in Stamford and the family were living at 2 Ladysmith Cottages (between 9 & 11 Empingham Road) in 1901. By 1911 their eldest son has died and their eldest daughter was living at Browne’s Hospital where she was a housemaid. The younger 3 children were living with them at 4 West End Villas, quite a smart newly built terrace. Charles was 18 years old and like his father a joiner for a builder. George was 16 years old and a cabinet maker, also for a builder. George joined the Army Cyclist Corps in September 1914 at which time the family had moved back to the Empingham Road area. He was posted to the Balkans on 6th August 1915 and subsequently served in the Dardanelles, Egypt and France. He was awarded the Victory and British Medals and the 1914/15 Star. He was demobbed in February 1919 and was employed by J T Clarke of 13 St Paul’s St. He probably died in 1972.
