The Tallis family consisting of six boys and two girls lived with their mother Mary Elizabeth at 7 Castle Cottages in  Castle Street . Their father Joseph James died in 1906. Mary Elizabeth was born in Oakham, Rutland. The family had previously lived in West Ham, Essex and moved to Stamford when their father died.

Charles Alfred

When he enlisted in 1915, he gave his occupation as a butcher’s assistant. He enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps. He was rated as a ‘fair’ butcher but not tested in slaughtering. He served in France from July 1917 until January 1918. He spent a considerable time in hospital suffering from bronchitis and pneumonia and was sent back to Eastbourne to convalesce and transferred to the Army reserve in March 1919.

He married Annie Elizabeth Chamberlain in Stamford in August 1923.

James Frederick Tallis

Before he joined the army James was an assistant in a boot and shoe shop. He joined the Lincolnshire regiment in 1917. He served in France.

He married Jane Walker in Leeds in November 1926 , giving his occupation as a railwayman. He lived at 24 Norman Street Kirkstall, Leeds where he died in 1979.

William Sydney Tallis

William enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry in 1916. He was a Prisoner of War in 1918.

In 1924 he married Lucy Dawson. He died in Leicester in 1973.
