Frank Cecil Thurrell

Frank was born in Stamford on 24th July 1900  and was the youngest of 8 children of Edward (a foundry worker) and May Elizabeth. In 1911 only Frank, a scholar, and his elder sister Agnes remained at home with their parents in 15 Lumbys Terrace. In 1916 he enlisted as Territorial 71355 and was attested 24th July 1917 on his 17th birthday.

Mobilised with the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry as Private 82506 he was posted to France on 31 July 1917 and declared missing on 1 Sep 1918. The final entry on his record reads “Death presumed by the War Office as having occurred on or about 21-29 August 1918”, this was probably at the re-taking of the Somme. He was 18 years old and had served just 1 year 227 days.

His name is recorded on the Memorial panel of St Martin’s church.
