8th December 2015 William Tidd The Tidd family occupied 7 rooms at 2 St Peter’s Hill in 1911. William Matthews, a widower, occupied 1 room at the same address. William Tidd’s parents, William and Sarah Ann, had been married for 26 years and had had 7 children, 6 of whom were alive and 5 of whom were with them when the census was taken. William was the first son and had 4 older sisters. Later he had 2 brothers although 1 died in infancy. He was born in Pinchbeck in 1898 but the family seem to have moved around a good deal – all the children were born in different places. At the time of the 1901 census, William’s father was described as a Farm Foreman but when they are at 2 St Peter’s Hill his occupation is given as a Bricklayer’s Labourer working for the Marquess of Exeter which suggests he may have come down in the world. Two of William’s sisters are in domestic service and another works at the Steam Laundry. William and his brother Reginald are still at school. So far no military records have been found for William. The entry for his mother In 1911 gives her age as 47 years and says she was an invalid and a Sarah A Tidd aged 49 years died in 1913 in the Oakham district so the likelihood is that the family moved on again. If William served, his records would not link him to Stamford.
