Cecil Wilkinson

Cecil Wilkinson, born in Stamford in July 1895 was the son of Arnold and Mary Wilkinson. His father was a hairdresser at 6 All Saints Street. His mother died when he was two and he and his sister Rose aged 16 went to live with his uncle and aunt John and Charlotte Winterton at 5 Zebra Cottages, Casterton Road. John Winterton was a labourer at the coach building works. In 1911 all the family except for Rose were living at 11 Castle Cottages.

On March 15th 1915 Cecil enlisted with the Sherwood Foresters. He was 5 ft 7 ins tall and weighed 105 lbs. He was posted the next day.

After training he was found to be unfit physically for military service and iIn October the same year he was discharged and described as ’not likely to become an efficient soldier’ in his military record.
