James and George Andrews and Herbert Jackson – 3 Rock Road

These 3 boys, James 14years, George 11 years and Herbert 16 years were living together with Mr and Mrs Andrews and 3 other members of the Andrews family – 8 of them in 4 rooms. Their lives were bound up together before and probably after the War.

In 1901 Herbert Jackson was living with his parents next to the Andrews family on Austin Friars Lane. His background was complicated. His father, Edward was widowed in 1881 and had 2 daughters and 2 sons by his first marriage. His mother, Emma, was widowed in 1886 and had 2 sons by her first marriage. Edward and Emma married in 1894 but before that Edward had lodged with Emma and they seem to have had 2 sons together before they were married as well as 2 sons, one being Herbert, after they married. When Herbert was 11 years old, his father died.

The Andrews family was also large. James and George had 6 older siblings and a younger brother. Their father had been a farm labourer but presumably when work was scarce he took on other labouring jobs. About 1908 the family moved to Rock Road, probably taking Herbert with them, and by 1911 James Andrews, senior, had greengrocer’s shop at Nos 1 & 2 while the family lived at No 3.

In 1911 Herbert aged 16 years was working at the brickworks, James aged 14 years was an errand boy for the shop and George aged 11 years was at school. Mr Andrew’s wife, Lily, and his 18 year old daughter also called Lily, were assisting him in the business. In 1912 Lily, the daughter, married Henry Jackson, Herbert’s elder brother and in due course they had 7 children.

Herbert Jackson

H Jackson is one of those recorded in the Stamford Mercury as having been recruited on 30th October 1914 and in the Rutland & Stamford Guardian an H Jackson, living at 5 Foundry Rd, was wounded in 1915 but this could be his brother Henry. No further records have yet been found for him.

James Andrews

James Andrews served as a Private in the 1st battalion of the 5th Lincs Regiment which may be James

George Andrews

George was probably too young to serve. He married Grace Elizabeth Burnham in 1925 and they had 2 sons and 2 daughters born in Stamford. He died in 1962.
