6th December 2015 Arthur Nugent Baker In 1911 Arthur was 16 years old. He was born in Stamford in 1895. His parents were Nugent & Gertrude (nee Chapman) Baker. His father was a tailor’s cutter. Arthur was an ironmonger’s assistant. His brother, Charles, was a tailor’s apprentice following in his father’s footsteps. The family lived at 17 Adelaide Street. In 1901 they had lived at 11 Adelaide Street. When Arthur enlisted in 1915 he was living at Bratley House Sleaford. Private Baker (5411) joined the 16th London Regiment. He was ‘at home’ until 5th July 1916 when he joined the Expeditionary Force in France. He was wounded with a gunshot wound in his wrist 18th September 1916. On the 1st January 1917 he was transferred to Machine Gun Corps (Heavy Artillery) as a gunner. He was promoted L/Cpl in 8th February 1918 – Tank Corps (770110) (20th June 1919). He returned to the UK as a corporal to be attached to the Central Workshops ( 1st September 1919). He was finally discharged on 31st March 1920 returning home to 17 Adelaide Street. Arthur’s death was registered in Peterborough in 1985
