William Butlin was born in Stamford in July 1898. He was the son of Alfred, a profile miller at the foundry and Lucy. In 1911 he was living with his parents , three sisters – Ethel Kate aged 14, Florence aged 9, Adeline 5 and a young brother William aged 5, in 1 New Street. Stamford. The younger children were born in Woburn Sands, Buckinghamshire, where they were living in 1901. His father was not at home as he was a Reservist, possibly in the Boer War.

William joined the Navy in August 1916. He had red hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. His first ship was the Victory, which was a training ship at Portsmouth. He was a Leading Mechanic and he completed his service in 1922.

He died in December 1969 in Peterborough.
