8th December 2015 Alfred William Greenwood In 1911 Alfred lived in 15 Sheepmarket with his father Alfred James and his mother Eliza . Alfred James was a foreman and he was a grocer’s errand boy. He had 2 brothers Walter aged 10 , George aged 7and a sister Susan. All three boys would go to war. Alfred was employed as a storeman at Martins agricultural machinery works. He enlisted in July 1914 in the 146 Labour Company. He served with the 4th Lincolnshires in France from February 28th 1915. He spent time in Rouen hospital suffering from the effects of a gas attack in May and was declared unfit for foreign service and returned to serve in England on July 16th 1915. He was again posted in July 1917 and eventually demobbed in 1919. Walter Greenwood Walter joined the 53rd Leicesters on October 10th 1918 and then served with the 3rd Lincs in Ireland. George Henry Greenwood George joined the RAF at the age of 16 on 21st of March 1919 and was stationed on the Isle of Sheppey. He lived in 15 Sheepmarket in 1911 and after the war at 32 Queen’s Walk, This area of the Sheepmarket has now been redeveloped.
