The parish of Wothorpe was attached to Stamford Baron and Wothorpe Road led from there to the original crossing over the River Welland. Between Wothorpe Road and High Street, St Martin’s were several short interlocking streets.

Many pubs and beer-houses (White Lion, Red Cow, Cross Keys, Sun & Railway, Telegraph) served this small community as well as offering hospitality to railway travellers who climbed up the steps from the railway station.
