Alfred William Siddy

Alfred Siddy was born in Stamford in 1896 and lived at 4 St. John’s Terrace with his widowed father George and two sisters, Gertrude 12 and Maud 9. By 1911 they had moved to 28 Austin Street. His father George was a coach smith at Hayes Carriage works . Alfred was a telegraph messenger.

By the time he enlisted in 1915 he was an apprentice coach builder employed by Hayes. In May 1916 was posted to France as part of the 510th Field Company. He was gassed and wounded in July 1917. He served finally in Germany in the British Army of the Rhine. He received the British and Victory medals.

He married Dorothy Wicken in Addlestone, Surrey in 1930 and died there in 1987. His sister Emily was a section leader in the W.R.A.F at Wittering.
