8th December 2015 Fred was Charles’ 12 year old brother in 1911, he was born in Stamford in 1898 and was at school in 1911. Fred followed his brother into the Lincolnshire Regiment. Private Fred Sismore (8335) enlisted in 1915 in Stamford into the 1st Battalion, later he was transferred to the 6th Battalion. He disembarked in France on 5th August 1915, 5 months after his brother Charles’ disembarkation. Sadly his brother was wounded and died within 2 months of Fred’s arrival. Gwalia Cemetery, Belgium Fred’s theatre of war was also the Western Front in northern France. He died of wounds on 25th July 1917 probably gained fighting in the first phase of the Third battle of Ypres. Fred was killed as a result of a German gas shell which ‘hit’ the dug out which he was occupying, he is buried and commemorated in the Gwalia Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium plot D.28 His obituary states that he was an ‘organ-blower at the church in Star Lane. His name also appears on the Lincolnshire Regiment Roll of Honour*, the Stamford Memorial* and St George’s Church Memorial . (* He is recorded as G.W. Sismore ) Fred was awarded the British War and Victory Medals and the 1914-15 Star.
