8th December 2015 Alfred Leopold Smith– 3 Brazenose Cottages Alfred’s parents were not local. Harry, his father came from Derby and his mother, Violet was born in Notting Hill. By the time they were in their early 20s they had settled in Stamford. Harry’s occupation in 1901 was a fitter of engines but by 1911 he was working on his account as a window cleaner. Alfred was born on March 10th 1900 in Stamford. His brother William Francis followed a year later and in 1901 they were living with their parents at 4 Billings Court. In 1911 they had moved to 3 Brazenose Cottages. Alfred aged 11 years and William aged 10 years were at school and there were 4 more children; Violet Ethel 8 years, Sidney 5 years, Florence Gertrude 3 years and Harry 5 months. Another brother John Cecil had died in infancy. No military records have been found for Alfred Leopold who was probably too young to serve but he did continue to live in Stamford. He married Constance Woodward in 1926 and had a son. She died in 1933 and he married again in 1940 to Mary Humberstone and had 2 daughters. He died in 1983.
