James Bertie Smith in the Lincs Regiment

James Bertie Smith was born in Chapel en le Frith in April 1897. His parents were Robert Owen Acton and Julia Smith (nee Newbon).

In 1901 they lived in Eccleshall, Sheffield where Robert was a gardener.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 6 Hope Terrace a four roomed house with four brothers, Robert Henry aged 18 , Owen Acton 16, John William 7, George 1 and two sisters Edith May Sibyl 9 and Rose Annie 5. Julia’s brother Harry Newbon was also living there.

His father, Robert and Owen all worked at the agricultural implement works.

He enlisted with the 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment where he achieved the rank of Company Sergeant Major.

Robert Henry Smith

Born in 1893, he was the elder brother of Owen Acton and James Bertie Smith. In the War he was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Engineers.

Amendments and Addenda

James Bertie married Ada Elizabeth Rodwell in Stamford on 17th May 1921 and they had 9 children, four boys and five girls. James Bertie died in Stamford in 1976 and his wife in 1979.
