8th December 2015 James Herbert Steele James Herbert Steele was born in Calcutta, India in 1900, where his father was a Warrant Officer in the Indian Army. By 1901, his father had died and he had returned to England with his mother Elizabeth and was living with his grandparents William and Maria French and brother William Edward at Southview Terrace, Stamford. His grandfather was a brewer’s drayman and his mother worked as a laundress. Etaples Military Cemetery, Boulogne In 1906 Elizabeth remarried; her spouse Albert Hardy was a compositor for a printer and they now lived at 17 Stanley Street. James joined the 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment and died in France on 21st October 1918 during the final advance of the Allied armies towards Germany, his grave is in Etaples Military Cemetery, Boulogne.
