Frederick William Town was born in October 1898 in Grantham and lived in Little Gonerby, Grantham with his four elder siblings until 1911. The family were originally from Nottinghamshire, the older children were all born in Balderstone. Fred’s father Harry was a foreman maltster and he and mother Sarah brought Fred to live in 7 Coronation Villas, Barnack Road at the time of the 1911 census. There were many maltings in Stamford serving the various breweries where Harry could find work. Fred’s elder brothers and sisters had left home but Fred was still at school.

In 1917 he joined the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment serving first in Ireland. Posted to France as Sergeant Town he was gassed sometime in 1918. He spent two years recovering in military hospitals, first in France then England. Finally he was demobbed in 1920 and came home.

In the summer of 1926 he married Margaret E. Johnston in Stamford and died in Boston, Lincolnshire in March 1983.
