James Woods

James was born Oakham in 1895 and came to Stamford with father John, a journeyman baker, mother Sarah and three younger siblings before 1901. They lived at 11 Newtown. When James left school he worked as a foundry-worker in one of the engineering works in the town.

On 15 July 1915 he enlisted as Private 60236 in the Leicestershire Regiment and was posted to the Western Front. There are no records of wounds or medals but he came home safely after the war. He married Maud A. Dawson in 1920 and stayed in the army until at least 1921.
