George Henry Ablewhite

George was born on 20 Sep 1898 in Boston, Lincolnshire where he lived with father Henry Reuben (a gardener), mother Charlotte, elder sister Bertha and baby Gladys in Boston until the early 1900s. The family then moved to the house at 2 Park Lane, Stamford. Two of Henry’s fellow-gardeners Sam aged 57 and Jack Matthews aged 16 lodged with them. Given the proximity to Burghley House they possibly all worked in the gardens there.

In 1911 George was a newsboy but at the outbreak of WWI he volunteered in the Northamptonshire Regiment. In February 1915 he was reported as ‘missing’ in France but no further service record has been found.

He eventually returned home because after the war he worked on the railways for the LNER, moving around the country to work at several different stations. He died in Sussex aged 72 in December 1970.
