Herbert Baldock was born in Stamford in 1896 and lived at 12 Church Lane, St Martin’s with his father David, a railway engineer and mother Selina. He was the fourth child of seven, all born in Stamford, Selina’s home town. In 1911 he was working as a junior clerk in an office in Stamford.

In 1915, aged 19, he enlisted in the Bedfordshire Royal Defence Corps. Later he was transferred to 5th Lancashire Infantry as Private 48788. He served in France and Belgium and was demobilised on 28th February 1919, thereafter he lived with his elder brother Ernest at 3 Church Lane.

Ernest born in Stamford in 1884, had also served in France with the Middlesex Regiment as Private 177957. Postwar they were both employed by the government at Wittering Aerodrome.

Herbert married Agnes M Wright in Stamford in the summer of 1949 and died in Peterborough Hospital in June 1975 aged 79.
