Jack Betts

In 1911 Jack was 11 years old. He was born in 1900 in Stamford. He lived with his parents John & Rachel (nee Dickins) Betts at 32 Adelaide Street (now rebuilt). His father was a fettler at an ironfoundry making agricultural implements. Jack was the second child of 3. They were all still at school. In 1901 they were living at 15 Adelaide Street.
By the time he was enlisting in the army he was a turner (machinist). He enlisted in Stamford on 26th January 1917. Private Betts (Reg. No. 51750) joined the 4th West Riding Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He was mobilised in Lincoln on 13th May 1918 and posted to Dublin. By the time he was demobbed ( 13th October 1919 ) he was a L/Cpl . He became a reservist after demobilisation and demobilised in May 1922. His military service was described as ‘very good’.
In 1923 he married Doris Mary Middleton in Stamford. They had a daughter.
Doris died in 1974 in Stamford.
