George was born in 1900 in Bottesford, his parents were George William and Augusta (nee Sardeson ) Bird. His father was born in Easton on the Hill, Northamptonshire, his mother in Pilsgate, Northamptonshire. In 1911 George , his parents and siblings (Fanny (9), Lister William (2) and Marjorie Mary (8 months) ) were living at 35 Wharf Road (now replaced by new buildings) in Stamford. Here his father was a hotel bus driver.

In 1901 George and his parents were living at 47 High Street, Bottesford and his father was then employed as a groom/gardener.

The family had moved to Stamford by 1904 when George’s sister Erene Frances was born but she only lived until 1906. This loss was followed by the birth and death of his brother Cyril in 1907.

The UK  WWI Service Medal and Ward Roll indicates that George served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was awarded the British and Victory Medals. His regimental number was 443192. No details of his military service have been found

In 1925 he married Mary Elizabeth Gilyatt in Grantham, their son Harold was born in 1926 and George’s death in 1973 is also registered in Grantham.
