Ernest Henry was born 1894 in Stamford. He lived with his father Charles H, an engineer/fitter and mother Fanny at 1 Albert Cottages, New Street. There were four older boys in the family, all born in Stamford, the eldest of whom had left home by 1901. William, aged 17 in 1901, left home before 1911 when the family moved to 19 Burghley Houses. Charles, then 23 and George, 18, who were both iron turners, were still at home and Ernest, aged 16, had left school. He was employed as a fitter like his father.

Ernest did not volunteer for military service but in the summer of 1916 he married Elizabeth Florence Hollis born 1895 Stamford. She was the daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth Hollis who lived at the New Salutation Inn, 14 Broad Street, where Arthur was the ‘licensed victualler’.

Ernest and his wife went to live in Conduit Road, Stamford, but sadly, Ernest died there on 18 May 1918. He was just 24, so may have had a condition which prevented his military service or possibly he succumbed to the influenza epidemic which was beginning to spread at that time. He was buried in Stamford Cemetery in June, 1918 and his grave is in Section B— LXII.

His widow married again in 1925 to Leland H Lowe born 1888 in Market Overton. In 1911 Leland was lodging in Ryhall Road (see John Barber) next door to Ernest Dunn’s family. Elizabeth Lowe died in Stamford in April, 1984.
