Charles James Foxon

Born in Stamford in 1899, Charles was still at school in 1911, the eldest of 6 children of Charles (railway carman) and Alice. When Charles was a baby he, his younger brother William (see below) and his parents lived with his maternal grandparents, James and Jane Stafford, in Milners Row, 3 Gas Street, Wharf Road, Stamford. Four more children were born there before the family left the grandparents and crossed the river to rent 8 Lumby’s Terrace.  A railway carman collected and delivered goods from the railway to local businesses in the town.

In 1917 Charles joined the 1-4 Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. After a week’s embarkation leave, 26 Nov to 3 Dec 1917, he was posted to France as Private 207718. Early in 1918 he was wounded. His wounds, officially “caused by active service”, were not described in detail but were sufficient for him to be assessed for a Disability Pension. In the spring of 1918 he was awarded 27s 6d for one week beginning 2 May 1918 and 16 shillings per week for a year after that, to be reviewed annually. He was discharged from active service on 19 April 1918 at Ripon and returned home to live in Stamford.

In 1919 he married Constance Bullock of Evesham, Worcestershire. His death was registered in Lincoln in 1969 when he was aged 71.
