Cyril Granter was born in 1899 in Stamford and lived with father Stuart, an engine driver, and mother Elizabeth at 11 Church Court, St Martin’s. The family had lived in Peterborough and Cyril’s elder brother was also a railway employee.

An elder sister still lived at home, but little is known of this family otherwise.
