8th December 2015 In 1901 Harry was one year old, he was born in 1900 in Moddershall, Stone, Staffordshire. On the 1901 Census he was living at 75 Lower Moddershall with his parents Henry Goodwin and Alice Mary Goodwin (nee Horwood). His father was born in Burslem, Staffordshire and his mother in Long Sutton , Lincolnshire. His father was a flint grinder (employer) in the pottery industry. His sister Kathleen was born in Stone, Staffordshire. His father died in 1902 and his mother remarried – to Leonard Frank Fereday Smith in Harrogate, Yorkshire in 1908. By 1909 the family had moved near to Stamford, with his stepsister, Alice Gertrude Smith, had been born in Easton on the Hill, Northamtonshire in 1909. In the 1911 Census they were living at the O’Brien’s Arms in St Paul’s Street. His stepfather was a bricklayer and two more daughters were born, Dora Smith in 1912 and Mabel Horwood Smith in 1912. SS Empress of Britain After their mother’s marriage Harry and Kathleen ‘adopted’ the name ‘Goodwin Smith’. On 9th May 1913 the family were passengers on the ‘Empress of Britain’ which set sail for Quebec, Canada. In 1916 they were living in Manitoba and by 1924 Harry was living in Minnesota, U.S.A. He eventually settled in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois marrying an English wife Louise Jenner, their son , Harry Goodwin Smith (Jr), was born in 1927. Harry died in Cook County in 1962.
