Sidney Hickman

Sidney was born Greetham, Rutland in the autumn of 1896 and lived at 6 Normanton Road, Easthope near Melton Mowbray with his father Frederick (a cowman), mother Eliza, three older brothers and a baby sister. Before 1911 his father died and his widowed mother brought the family to live in Maltings Yard, Water Street, Stamford. Sidney worked as an errand lad but the family moved again before the beginning of WW I to Sproxton, Leicestershire.

Sidney was attested sometime in 1917 as Private 21766 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was posted to France and transferred to the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment as Private 43443. On 17 July 1917, aged 21, he was killed in action and buried in France.

His name is on the Arras memorial at Fauborg D’Amiens Cemetery but is not on St Martin’s memorial as the family no longer lived in the parish.
