Before 1911 his father died and his widowed mother brought the family to live in Maltings Yard, Water Street, Stamford. Sidney worked as an errand lad but the family moved again before the beginning of WW I to Sproxton, Leicestershire. Sidney was attested sometime in 1917 as Private 21766 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was posted to France and transferred to the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment as Private 43443.
