Arthur Henry Joseph Hollis – The Stag & Pheasant, 14 Broad Street

Arthur Hollis grew up at the Stag & Pheasant public house where his father, Arthur Samwells Hollis was the licensee for about 20 years.

There were 4 children in the family and Arthur born in 1898 was the youngest with 3 older sisters. Arthur joined the Lincolnshire Regiment as a Private but was transferred to the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment.

He was barely 19 years old when he was killed in action on the Somme on 2nd December 1917. He was awarded the British and Victory medals.

He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France and on the St Mary’s Church War Memorial in Stamford.
