John Percival Potter

John was the son of Edwin Percival and Mary Eliza Potter. He was the only son and was born inĀ  1897. He had four sisters by 1911 – Geraldine Maria aged 14, Dorothy Clare12, Kathleen Beatrice 11 and Vera Isabel aged six. All the children were born in Stamford. In 1901 the family lived at 3 West View. The street had been renamed by 1911 and their address was now 3 Kings Road.

He enlisted in the 2/7 Essex Regiment (number 3468) Rifle Brigade in March 1915. He was in England until August when he went to France with the British Expeditionary Force, returning in October. He was transferred to the London Regiment as a rifleman (303946).

In September 1917 he was discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service because of an injury to his right forearm. He received the British and Victory medals.
