8th December 2015 Percy Charles Royce Percy was born in Stamford in 1897 and was part of the large family at 53 High Street, St Martins. By 1911 only four of them were young enough to be still at home, older brother Francis, Percy (at school), Hilda and Harold. Percy enlisted in the London Regiment as Private 3729 and on 6 Sep 1915 and he was transferred to the London Rifle Brigade as Rifleman 318298. He was taken prisoner by the Germans on 29 Jan 1918 and after the war he was awarded £8 from the Stamford Prisoner of War Fund. He is subsequently recorded as living in Lambeth, London where he married Hilda F. Milsom of Islington in 1927. Francis and Percy’s elder brother, Bertie Clifton born in Stamford in 1890, was living in Northampton before WW I, working in a draper’s shop. He enlisted as Private 4503 in the Machine Gun Corps of the London Regiment and was killed in action in Flanders on 21 March 1918.
