8th December 2015 Leslie Maltby Ryman– 31 Empingham Road Leslie Ryman was born in Bury, Lancashire in November 1899 where his father was the Deputy Borough Engineer. He was the youngest of 4 children. The family came to Stamford when his father, Frederick Robert, became the Municipal Engineer and Surveyor for the Borough Council. They lived at 31 Empingham Road, a fairly substantial house. When he was 8 years old Leslie’s mother, Harriet, died and then early in 1911 his eldest brother 22 years old Reginald also died. At the time of the 1911 census Leslie and his sister Kathleen Mary (14 years) were still at school and their sister Gladys Rose (20 years) was also living at home. Leslie served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in Europe and was awarded the Naval War Medal as well as the British and Victory medals. (Further details are available at the National Archives.) In 1926 he married Winifreda Wise at Eton and he died at Oxford in 1976. Neither of his sisters married. Gladys Rose continued to live in Stamford where she died in 1942. Kathleen Mary died in Bracknell, Berkshire in 1994 aged 97 years.
