John Francis Sheffield

Francis was the third son of Thomas and Susan Sheffield, born in July 1899. In 1901 he was living at 29 St. Peter’s Street with his parents and two older brothers Harry aged 17 and Percy 11 and two sisters Jane 15 and Margaret 13. Thomas was a grocer. By 1911 just Francis and Margaret were living at home.

On May 13th 1918, Francis enlisted with the Lincolnshire Regiment (17229) serving in the Infantry Division in France. He married Elsie Smith in 1929 and he died in Stamford in June 1970.

Percy Sheffield

Percy Sheffield sailed for Australia on the Otway on July 31st 1914 when he was 23, his occupation was a moulder. During the voyage, war broke out and after landing in Sidney he enlisted in the 4th Australian Brigade. He was posted with the fourth reinforcements and served in the Dardanelles campaign.

In a letter to his parents he wrote in 1916, he said that he was in hospital in Alexandria suffering from rheumatic fever and did not think that he would be able to return to the trenches.

Percy was awarded the Silver War Badge in 1916.
