6th December 2015 Charles Herbert Bailey In 1911 Charles aged 14 was living in 13 Bath Row Stamford with his parents, three brothers and his cousin Charles Thistleton. His father James was a blacksmith and Charles himself was an errand boy. He enlisted in December 1915 and joined the 4th Battalion Lincolnshire regiment. He was only 5ft 3inches tall and weighed 117 lbs. In January 1916 he was posted to France and promoted to Lance Corporal 1919. In January 1918 he spent two periods (100 days in total) in hospital suffering from trench feet. He was demobbed in 1919. His father died at the age of 42 in 1915 and his elder brother Walter, who also served with the Lincs Regiment was killed in March 1918 in France but his mother only had confirmation in September. In 1924 Charles married Alice Smith in Stamford. Charles Thistleton His cousin, Charles Thistleton, living at the same address also served in the war with the Lincolnshire Regiment in France. Charles had moved to 15 Bath Row by 1939 and died in Stamford in 1966.
