Arthur, the brother of Ezra Wardle of 1 Tenter Lane, also lived in Tenter Lane. Arthur was a joiner/carpenter for a local builder. He was born in Stamford. His wife was Harriet May (nee Inchley). She was born in Great Easton, Leicestershire. In 1901 and 1911 this family was living at 6 Tenter Lane. In 1911 Arthur was a widower. He had been married 25 years and had 9 surviving children. They were all born in Stamford and in 1911 seven children were still living at home with the second eldest son also called Arthur living with his uncle in 1 Brazenose Lane.

William, Arthur’s eldest son, was born in 1893 and in 1911 he was an apprentice baker.

He also enlisted in the 4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment Territorials. Private William (3619) was killed in action in France/Flanders on 14th August 1915 three months after his cousin, John William.

He is buried and commemorated at the Hop Store Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, so called because of a nearby hop store building which was >used as an advanced dressing station (ADS) during the war. He is also remembered on the Stamford and St George’s War Memorials and was awarded the Victory, British Medals and 1914-15 Star.
