John Davies from Carmarthenshire married Charlotte Bertha Baines from Ketton and all their children including John Evan were born in the Stamford area. John Evan was born on 30th May 1897 and his baptism is recorded in Stamford Methodist Circuit Register on 13th October that year.

He grew up at The Sawyers’ Arms, 67 Casterton Road (since renamed as the  Drum & Monkey) where his father was the landlord, although his main occupation seems to have been as a wheelwright. In 1911 John Evan was an Office Errand Boy aged 13 years and he had 3 sisters – Charlotte 11 years, Ethel 9 years and May 3 years.

John Evan was one of a group of boys who were recruited in March 1915 and he enlisted as a Private in the 1st Lincolnshire Regiment. He served in France and on his demobilisation in February 1919 returned to 67 Casterton Road.

He seems to have stayed in the Stamford area where he married Martha A Smith in 1923 and died in 1967.
