6th December 2015 George Sidney & William Harry Carr – 2 North Street In 1911 Sidney & Harry Carr were living with their widowed mother and family at 2 Northgate. There were 8 children in the family, all born in Stamford. Sidney aged 13 years and Harry aged 10 years were at school as were 2 younger sisters. The older children were all working but living at home. Their father, a tailor, had died in 1907. All the boys had 2 Christian names but were all known by the second one. Sidney It is probable Sidney served in the war but no records have been found and it seems that the family moved away from Stamford sometime before 1918 when Harry enlisted giving a Nottingham address. Harry Harry attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment in May 1918 when he must have been only 17yrs old. He was 5ft 7½ inches but only weighed 114lbs and his fitness was classed B2. He was recommended for the Labour Corps as he was not considered able for active service. He was discharged and awarded a pension of 22/- in August 1919 on the basis that he had a tubercle on the lung which had been aggravated by his service in the army. In 1923 he got work and wrote to the army for a reference. He married in Nottingham in 1925 and lived until he was 83 years old dying at Ilkeston, Derbyshire in 1983.
