George was born in 1899 in Stamford, his parents were Sam and Rosa (nee Bland) Clark. They were married in Kilburn London. George’s father was a Brewer’s Agent (Commercial Traveller). His mother was the daughter of a farmer in Ryhall and had been employed as a private governess before her marriage. In 1901 and 1911 the family was living at 3 Brownlow Terrace, Stamford, he was an only child.

In1911 George was attending school and he was later a pupil at Stamford School from January 1913 until April 1916. Here he was active in sport and also served with the School Cadet Corps.

In the war George joined up in London firstly with the London Regiment and then with the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade.
He was killed in action on 24th April 1918 probably during the Battle of Villiers-Bretonneux during the spring offensive that was designed to break the deadlock of the war.
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozières Memorial.

In Stamford George is remembered on the War Memorial and the memorials in Stamford School, St George’s Church and St Mary’s Church
(George’s paternal grandfather had earlier association in Stamford. In 1881 he was the ‘proprietor’ of the Stamford Hotel in St Mary’s Street.)
