John Corby – 4 Burrell’s Court

William Corby and Emily Green married in 1893 and by 1911 had had 10 children but 2 had died. Their daughter, Emily, also died a couple of months after the census aged 15 years and they went on to have 2 more children before 1914. John was the eldest surviving son and together with his younger siblings always lived in Burrell’s Court.

John’s father worked as a labourer for the Borough Council but had previously been a labourer in a stone quarry. His eldest sister worked as a general servant but lived at home and although John, aged 11 years, was still at school he also worked as a milk boy for a cow-keeper.

No military details have been found for John so he may not have been called up – he was only born in 1900.

John married Carrie Walpole in 1923 and they had 5 children in the Stamford area between 1924 and 1936.
