Charles Raymond Cook – 34 Broad Street

Charles Raymond Cook was born in Stamford in 1897. He had a younger brother Redvers born in 1900 and 5 older siblings, all of them born in Stamford. His father John Horn Cook was a builder and contractor. In 1911, 5 of the children were living with their parents in 11 rooms at 34 Broad Street. Gertie, aged 25, was the manageress of a boot and shoe business, John Claude was apprenticed to his father and the other 3 children – Dorothy 16 years, Charles 14 years, Redvers 10 years – were all at school.

Charles joined the 6th Battalion of the Northants Regiment about 1916.

His address at enlistment was Syston, Leicester and as he is not listed on any of the Stamford Memorials so presumably the family had moved before then.
He was killed in action in March 1917 and is buried at Queen’s Cemetery, Bucquoy 15km south of Arras.

The cemetery began with 23 men killed in the area in March 1917.
